The Beginning
I've been having a bit of writer's blog lately so I decided to start blogging about how Kirk and I met, our story! Today's will be short, I'll start it with the day we met :)
Before Kirk and I really "met", we were introduced to each other my freshman year of college, spring of 2002, at a Gamma Phi Beta formal. He was the date of one of my friends. We hung out in a large group all night and really didn't get the chance to get to know each other and no sparks flew.
The time we actually "met" for the first time, another friend of mine who was friends with Kirk got invited to his Grandma Jean's annual 3rd of July party. My friend called and begged me to go with her so she didn't have to go alone. I had other plans but reluctantly agreed and we drove out to Ginger Cove late at night on July 3rd.
Immediately when we got there Kirk greeted us, then proceeded to tell me I needed to swim, so he threw me over his shoulder and ran off the end of the dock. I thought it was cute but I wasn't head over heels. My friend and I stayed out late that night and had lots of fun with the large mass of people there. Then we left and stayed at a nearby friend's home and in the morning we went back out to Ginger Cove to hang out with Kirk and one of his friends. The four of us had a blast all day, paddle-boating, swimming, eating and getting to know each other. At one point in the day I was sitting on a bench on the beach and Kirk's wallet was sitting there so I idly thumbed through it and noticed a daVinci's pizza coupon. I slyly asked Kirk if he liked daVinci's and he told me he hated it and it was the worst food on earth. I just smiled and said "okay!" but didn't tell him it was my family business. Later in the afternoon my friend and I got ready to head back to Lincoln for the Fourth of July festivities down there. As we were leaving Kirk asked me for my phone number so that he could "call me if he ever had another party". I didn't think anything of it.
The next day, Kirk called and profusely apologized for not knowing my parent's owned daVinci's. He was so embarrassed. After I assured him there was no harm done, he asked if I wanted to come up the next weekend. "Are you having another party?" I asked. "Um, nope. It'll just be you and me. Like a date." Then I knew, he liked me!! I didn't know what to think but I did know I wanted to get to know this hilarious handsome guy a little better. So I begged out of my shift at work and went up to Omaha for a date with Kirk. This was the beginning of our love story!
*Just to note, this is not from the 1st day we met. This is about 5 1/2 years and 10 lbs heavier than the day we met. This was our first Christmas as a married couple in 2007. Holy Smokes, I must have been doing some good cooking back then, we look like we're packing walnuts in our cheeks, haha!

My Day
Here's a little re-cap of my day.
Max has started a little phase of pickyness regarding his clothes. He has become obsessed with "JEANS!!!" Every morning after breakfast when we race back into his bedroom to put on clothes, he madly dashes over to his dresser, whips open his pants drawer, and pulls out a pair of jeans. Then he flies back to me, all the while yelling, "JEANS!!!!" at the top of his lungs.
Today we were headed off to P.E. 101, a little gym for toddlers and I tried to convince Max wearing jeans wouldn't be as easy to run around in at the gym. Have you ever tried to convince a toddler of anything?? It's like trying to catch a greased pig. Not happening. More like a Stage 5 meltdown. So we wore jeans to the gym and all was right in the world.
In the spirit of talking about clothes, I also have to mention Max has started another lovely habit of removing his shoes and socks every time we get in the car. Then he heartily chucks them as hard as he can either in the way back trunk or at my head. I'm almost to the point of putting him in the car sock/shoe-less until we get to our destination. Not worth putting on socks/shoes twice for one outing!
Today after we played stiffly in "JEANS!!!" at P.E. 101, I decided to run down to a little boutique I love called the Chocolate Peacock. This boutique has really nice things so I was a little nervous about taking Max, but since I was feeling brave, I went for it. After a few minutes in the store, Max decided he didn't want to wear his shirt anymore. So he took it off. In the middle of the store. And ran around the store shirtless. Can we say "frat boy in the making??" Oh brother!
When we got home from running around topless at the Chocolate Peacock, I got Max ready to head down for a nap. Since he insisted on wearing "JEANS!!!" all day, I took them off so he could nap more comfortably (have you ever tried to nap in jeans? It's so freaking uncomfortable). Max lay quiet in his crib for about 5 minutes, then he started screaming at the top of his lungs. I let him scream/cry it out for about 10 minutes when I figured something must be wrong. Wrong Indeed!! When I went into Max's room, he was standing in his crib, naked from the waist down holding his diaper. After I re-diapered the little Houdini, he finally let me put a pair of sweatpants on to go back down for a nap.

I do have to say I love a cute naked baby. But Max isn't a baby anymore. Nakedness needs to stay at home!
This was my day! Lord help me :)

Girlfriends
Today I'm thankful for girlfriends. I feel really blessed to have different groups of friends in my life. I feel like each different group of friends makes me a better person in a unique way. Whether it be girlfriends I grew up with, worked with in the past, went to college with, met through other friends, go to church with, or am in an organization with, I know I would not be who I am today without them.
Today I was having a rough day. A really rough day. I was supposed to go to the zoo with two friends and their sons. Not only did I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, but Max was being especially difficult this morning and my patience was at an all time low. After packing a lunch, trying to feed Max 3 different things for breakfast that all ended up being flung all over my kitchen floor and trying to get myself out the door, I finally texted my friend and let her know we wouldn't be making it. We were running late and I was on the verge of tears.
My wonderful friend was such an encouragement to me. She told me twice that I really needed to get out of the house and come to the zoo, that it would be really good for me and for Max.
I'm so glad I took her up on that. I was late but my friends didn't care. And when I saw them I cried and they just hugged me and loved me even when I was feeling at my worst. And we had a fabulous day at the zoo. Fresh air and lots of running around was great for both Max and I. And we wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for my friend.
So today I'm thankful for my girlfriends. ALL my girlfriends. Thank you for giving me something to look forward to when we plan fun things to do, thank you for your encouraging words, your hugs, your laughter and your unfailing love. Without you I'd be a mess. Thank you, Friends!!

Thankful
Today I'm Thankful For:
*My in-laws! Everytime I hear someone complain about theirs, I feel so blessed to have amazing in-laws!
*Medication. Whether it be Tylenol or Zanax, I'm so thankful to have drugs that help with life's aches and pains.
*Maggie. Even though sometime I want to kill her, she brings so much joy to our lives.
*Facebook! It helps me stay in touch with old friends and stalk new ones. :)
*Stokes restaurant. It's my favorite in Omaha and I could eat there almost every day. God Bless their Roasted Corn Chowder!!!

Confession
I have a confession....I am intimidated by my Kitchen Aid mixer.
Isn't it a beauty? This is a picture of the exact mixer I own.
This kitchen appliance was at the top of my list when I registered for my wedding over 3 1/2 years ago because in my eyes it was the one thing every proper woman should own. And during my family shower when Kirk's Grandma Jean, bless her heart, graciously gave this to me, I was so overjoyed that I finally could call my kitchen complete! I also really didn't want to purchase one myself because they are outrageously expensive, and to be totally honest, I had no idea even back then what in the world I would use one for. But I knew I wanted one desperately and was so thankful when I received it as a gift.
Then I hauled it home, unpacked it, and there it sat. And sat. And sat. Eventually I put the fancy cover for it that Grandma Jean, bless her heart, had also purchased for me. (Did she know I wouldn't use it enough that I would need to cover it lest dust settle in? Hmmm...) I even stuck a few silk flowers in the pocket of this cover to make it less of an eyesore on my counter, but the only thing this Kitchen Aid ever did for me was collect dust. Every couple weeks or so :aka, not very often, I would pull the Kitchen Aid out from the wall, take the cover off, shake off the dust and then dust the entire machine, because even though it sat in it's lonely corner with a nice cover, it was so seldom used that the inside of it even collected dust, even with the cover on!!!
No need to ask why I even bothered dusting it if I wasn't going to use it....if you know me, you also know I am a bit OCD.
So fast-forward 3 1/2 years. As the 2 readers of my blog might have gathered, recently I've been cooking up a storm, trying new recipes and re-discovering my passion for whipping up something fabulous in the kitchen for my family. Last week I decided to re-arrange my entire kitchen so I could have a bit more usable counter space for such endeavors. In this process I decided to unleash my Kitchen Aid from it's sad corner spot to the corner where I do most of my "whipping up". I took the cover off, washed the cover (which ashamedly I had never done before), and proudly set it up in it's new home.
And today is the day I will conquer the Kitchen Aid. I'm about to go "whip up" a batch of Apple Craisin Walnut bread, and gosh darn it if I'm not going to use this mixer. I must overcome my fear. Many friends use their Kitchen Aid for absolutely everything and swear by it's awesomeness, but I've been telling myself that I like to mix things by hand. It's time to stop lying to myself. Who in their right mind likes! to mix things by hand??? I get enough of an exercise picking up my 33 lb munchkin, I don't need to exert more effort my mixing all my batters by hand when I have a perfectly wonderful Kitchen Aid to use. Today is the day. Wish me luck. My life is about to change forever!
And in the spirit of being Thankful, I have decided that after today, I will be very thankful for this machine!

Thankful For...
So the countdown is on for Thanksgiving and I thought I would do some "Thankful For" posts leading up to the big day!
I am thankful for a week full of Halloween activities to keep us entertained and a fabulous Mom's Club party to get the week kicked off right with all our favorite people!

I am thankful Kirk could get off work early enough one night for a family night at Valas!

I am thankful for a son who loves to dress up as much as his daddy. (No, I'm not being sarcastic, if you know my husband at all you know his passion for this!)

I am thankful that my husband is a hard worker who loves his career but still manages to know how to balance being a wonderful father to our son. *Not sure what Max is looking at in this picture but one might imagine it was a scary ghost or something from his expression!*

I am thankful that my son naps 3-4 hours every day so I can either get some things done or take a nap :)
I am thankful for Scooter's Decaf Evening Blend coffee so I can enjoy my pumpkin spice creamer at night, which I happen to be doing at this very moment!
I am also thankful that just a few moments ago I called the "jury duty" hotline and found out my presence is not required tomorrow. YAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!
Happy November!! What are you thankful for?
